How it works

Three pillars, half a century of evidence

Kimcura didn’t invent how learning works. It takes three ideas from education research and brings them to your phone.

The 2 sigma problem

Bloom measured that a student with a personal tutor scores about two standard deviations above one in a conventional class — beating 98% of it. Getting something like that without a tutor next to every student is exactly what Kimcura aims at.

Mastery learning

What should vary between students isn’t how much they learn, it’s how long they need. Kimcura fixes the level of mastery and doesn’t move you on until you reach it. A meta-analysis of over a hundred studies measured a 0.52 σ effect, largest for those who started furthest behind.

Bayesian knowledge tracing

A good tutor always knows what you’ve mastered and what you haven’t. Kimcura does the same: it keeps, exercise by exercise, the probability that you’ve mastered each of the 768 skills in the atlas, and uses it to choose what to show you next.

Research

Want to be part of a university research paper?

We're looking for students aged 14 to 19 for a one-year study of the app's effect on math learning.

The study will follow participants' math learning over a full school year. The main measure is score: timed, full-length practice tests repeated across the year, to see how much — and how fast — each student improves.

Behind it is a question of effectiveness: how many hours of practice sit behind each point of improvement, and which kind of practice — feed exercises, practice tests, video lessons — pays off most. We'll also track progress across the 768 skills in the app's skill tree.

Everything comes from the practice data the app already records, analyzed in aggregate.
